Details of our Karoo Motorcycle Tour
Day 1
Cape Town – Kagga Kamma
Welcome to Cape Town! After collecting your bikes, you’ll head north towards the Cederberg mountains, famous for their rock formations.
You’ll cross Bainskloof Pass, a mountain pass on the R301 regional road between Wellington and Ceres in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
The pass reaches 594 metres at its highest point. Here, the road joins the Witte River, which flows down the northern slope of the mountains through a steep cleft to an expanse of rapid waterfalls and natural pools. The Bainskloof Pass is now a national monument.
You’ll pass through the small village of Ceres, nestled in an orchard-covered valley, before taking the track through the mountains to Kagga Kamma.
Day 2
Kagga Kamma – Twanka Karoo
After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, you’ll be back on the road at around 09:00, heading for Gannagada Lodge, skirting the Tankwa Karoo National Park from the west.
Tankwa Karoo National Park is a national park in South Africa. The park lies around 70 km west of Sutherland, close to the border between the Northern Cape and the Western Cape, in one of South Africa’s driest regions, with an average annual rainfall of less than 100mm.
Day 3
Twanka Karoo – Calvinia
Today, we cross the Park from north to south, where the terrain will be 99% piste. Crossing the Tankwa is the antidote to the city’s dilemma, stirring the soul and putting the universe into perspective. See the horizon, hear the silence, smell the fresh air.
On leaving Tankwa, you’ll head for Calvinia, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 4
Calvinia – Clan William
This morning, you’ll take the track south to Clanwilliam, one of the country’s ten oldest towns, famous for its Rooibos plantations.
Overnight at Cederberg Ridge.
Day 5
Clan William – The West Coast
It’s here, on the West Coast, that you’ll head after a hearty breakfast.
You’ll take a pretty gravel pass along the east/west axis through the mountains between the agricultural areas along the R365 to the west, with the Kransvleikloof pass to the east, close to the N7 in the Sandveld region on the west coast. The region is well known for potato production and in this kloof, with its own micro-climate, many farms also produce citrus products, similar to the Olifants river valley a few kilometers further east.
Day 6
The West Coast – Worcester
Early departure for Worcester, located in the Breede River Valley. A big day’s riding awaits you, as you cross the Cederberg again, but this time from north to south, passing through Algeria and the Cederberg Wines vineyards.
You’ll stop in Kromriver for lunch.
Day 7
Worcester – Cape Town
An early start for the big day ahead, as you make your way to Cape Town to drop off your bikes. This is where your motorcycle adventure ends!
